"Price has no meaning without a measure of the quality being purchased" - Deming
I want to explain how I price my knives and the pricing of the options. The most important thing is, you and I have to feel good about the transaction. It must be a win, win situation. Selling you another knife in the future is my goal.
My smallest, most basic folder which starts at $325.00 has exactly the same style and fit as my knives costing twice as much. No grind lines or gaps. The only difference is the choice of handle material, bolsters, and the final finish. The steel is normally ATS-34. I offer 440-C for no additional charge.
The prices below includes the following:
Hollow
or flat ground blade
ATS-34
steel
Titanium Spacer (I use 416 Stainless on some of my folders) It depends on the
thickness of the blade.
Titanium liners (jeweled)
Maroon Linen Micarta
Basic knife with standard options (blade lengths are approximate)
Blade Length |
Without Bolsters | With Bolsters |
2 1/2" & 2 15/16" | $325.00 | $400.00 |
3 1/4" | $350.00 | $450.00 |
4 1/8" | $450.00 | $525.00 |
Blade Options |
BG-42 |
440-C |
D-2 |
A-2 |
2 1/2" & 2 15/16" | $25.00 | N/C | $25.00 | $15.00 |
3 1/4" | $35.00 | N/C | $30.00 | $20.00 |
4 1/8" | $50.00 | N/C | $35.00 | $25.00 |
There are several reasons why I have to charge more for BG-42 than ATS-34. BG-42 is almost 400% more expensive than ATS-34. Now that is not a real big expense, since most of my knives use less than 5" of steel. The real expense is due to the fact that BG-42 does not come in the thickness I need for the small knives. The least thickness I can purchase is .130. The blade thickness for the small 2 1/2 to 2 15/16" knives is right at .090 to .100. I have to spend several hours on my manual surface grinder to bring BG-42 down to that thickness. Also, since BG-42 and D-2 have a little more than 1% Vanadium, I use more than twice the grinding belts and sandpaper.

Handle Material Pricing Information
Now I want to tell you about handle material.
It does not matter if it is Stag, Mother of Pearl, Mastodon Ivory, or Jigged
Bone. You the
customer are paying for the beauty of the outside of the
material. For folders, this means I must bring the thickness down to approximately
1/8". That is, unless you want a "pocket" knife that is 1" thick. I think
not. This is a very dangerous procedure. This is how I almost removed my
index finger a couple of years ago. When working with natural materials, there has been
several times when doing the final shaping, I found a defect that made the
material unusable. So you can see, there is a lot of time and expense
involved with fitting a nice piece of handle material.
File Work and Fluted scales Information (pricing above)
This is a very tedious procedure. After marking the liners or spacer with Dykem blue, I have to measure and mark increments as small as .060. I then use various size Swiss files to put in the decoration. This is where I can turn a $700.00 knife into a gift for one of my children. With just one small slip of my hand or if I let my mind wander....well anyway, you get the picture.
Of course when I am
fluting Mother of Pearl or Ivory scales, that means I can mess up some big
bucks real quick. Been there, done that.
