         Mark Laramie

Mark Laramie lives in Massachusetts and is married with eight (yes 8) children. He began making knives in 2000 and sold his first knife in the fall of that same year. His interest in making knives began with a trip to the local library to pick up some books with one of his daughters for a school report. He ended up leaving with two books on knife making.

Mark started by buying a couple of knife blades and began fashioning handles and guards for them. He then  tried a couple more... and more. Mark is pretty much self taught but did use several books to help him, 'How to make folding knives' being the main book. He then bought a couple of folding kit knives, checked out how they were assembled and drew up a couple of his own designs. He began cutting and finishing his own liners, bolsters and back straps. Then the hard part - he began cutting and grinding his own blades. Mark has been working on perfecting his technique ever since. He told me that with each knife he completes, he learns something new to make the next knife even better.

Mark makes each of his custom knives by hand from the best materials available. He flat grinds each of his blades and hand sands them. They are then professionally heat treated. Each thumb stud is cut, ground, and finished by hand. Liners, back-straps, and bolsters are also cut, ground, and finished by hand. He generally use Torx screws for assembly but  will occasionally use pins for a traditional look. Mark uses a small drill press, a band saw, 1" & 4" belt sanders, and some hand tools.

As far as steels, Mark likes 440C & ATS-34 for stainless. In Damascus he uses Devin Thomas, Eggerling, Donnelly, Chris Marks, and Craig Barr.

Mark also uses 1095 for high carbon, D2 for tool steel. He uses Massachusetts steel treating for his stainless steels.

Look for some automatics from Mark in the near future.
