Let me start with Joe's bibliography.  He got the knowledge for this FAQ from his own experience as a collector and amateur knifemaker, and from countless conversations with custom makers.  Mr. Russell really needs no introduction. He has done more for knife making and Knifemakers than anyone else. His website has a wealth of information. You need to check it out. :-)
